What should we know about hand sanitisers?

There are hundreds of hand gels out there, all offering antibacterial properties, but how do we know which one to chose?

For antibacterial hand gel to be effective it needs to contain between 60 and 90 percent alcohol.

This is how we define what hand sanitiser is. There are many products out there that have as low as 50 percent alcohol, so we need to make sure that the product we are picking has an optimum effect, but is that the first thing we should be looking for?

The answer is no.

Hand sanitisers vary and usually they will have pretty much the same ingredients, but sometimes they may be different. The first thing we should be looking at is at the ingredients list and sure we are not allergic to any of them. The ingredients will be listed on the back of the bottle, or if you're buying online you will usually be able to see what the ingredients are.

Having ruled out allergies, then we can look at the volume of alcohol. Usually the higher volume, the better, but ideally we would like to pick around 70 percent alcohol.
We should be looking at other ingredients too. Alcohol-based hand gels leave the skin very dry. 90 percent of the cheap hand gels rely purely on high alcohol volume to be effective; for some people dry skin can be a problem. Also, most of these hand gels do not leave a pleasant scent.

Usually, we don't think about things like this when buying a hand sanitiser. We just want it to be effective to get rid of the bad bacteria, but having a hand sanitiser that nourishes the skin and keeps it hydrated is very important.
